Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Head, UN-SPIDER Beijing Office, and in consultation with designated experts from Wuhan University and UNU-INWEH, the consultant will undertake, but not be limited to, the following tasks:

1. Inception and review

·         Review existing documentation and materials provided by UN-SPIDER, Wuhan University and UNU-INWEH.

·         Clarify and confirm final course structure, learning outcomes and technical depth across four modules:

o    Module 1: Introduction to Chinese Earth Observation Satellites

o    Module 2: Using Optical Satellite Data Analysis

o    Module 3: SAR Data – Seeing Through Clouds and Darkness

o    Module 4: Case Studies and Practical Applications: Chinese EO Data for the SDGs

2. Course design (refinement)

·         Develop a short course design note including:

o    Target audience, prerequisites

o    Learning objectives

o    Recommended 4–6 week learning journey

o    Integration of case studies and assessments

3. Development of PowerPoint learning materials

·         Develop slide decks covering:

o    Chinese EO programmes, institutions, missions

o    Technical specs and use cases of major optical and SAR satellites

o    Data access and licensing guidance

o    Workflows for optical and SAR data processing

o    Case studies (disaster risk reduction, water resource management, socio-economic applications)

·         Ensure slides are clear, concise, structured, and brand compliant.

4. Development of video scripts

·         Prepare scripts/storyboards for pre-recorded lectures and demonstrations including:

o    Intro videos

o    Screen-capture tutorials

o    Case study walkthroughs

5. Development of quizzes and self-assessment activities

·         Design quizzes assessing:

o    Chinese EO missions

o    Correct processing steps

o    Interpretation and SDG application

·         Provide answer keys and at least one optional mini-project.

6. Finalization and handover

·         Revise based on feedback.

·         Submit final versions:

o    Editable slides

o    Editable video scripts

o    Quizzes and mini-projects

o    Course design/implementation note

·         Organize outputs for platform integration.

Qualifications/special skills

·         Advanced university degree in remote sensing, GIS, geography, environmental science, disaster risk management, instructional design, or related fields.

·         At least 10 years professional experience in learning material development and/or EO application.

·         Experience with PPT training materials, scripts, quizzes, EO tools (QGIS, SNAP).

·         Knowledge of Chinese EO missions (required).

·         UN/international organization experience desirable.

Languages

·         English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat.

·         Fluency in English required.

·         Knowledge of another UN language an advantage.

·         Knowledge of Chinese desirable.
